Organizations with shiftworkers have been found to experience:
- An increase in industrial accidents due to worker fatigue, with the most serious accidents happening between the hours of 2:00 am and 6:00 am. For example, the Hinton train crash in 1986, and the Chernobyl and Three Mile Island nuclear incidents all happened on the night shift or were attributed to fatigue
- Shiftwork organizations also experience twice as many motor vehicle accidents with 31% of heavy truck accidents in 1998 being attributed to driver fatigue
- An increase in organizational health care expenses
- A higher level of employee turnover, leading to an increase in hiring and training cost
