Target
Risky health behaviours by employees cost organizations. Research
demonstrates that changing those behaviours saves the employer money
by reducing health claim costs, disability claims, employee turnover
and absenteeism, and by increasing productivity.
Ready, Aim
Shifting to Wellness aims to arm Shiftworkers with the tools and
strategies to change risky behaviours into positive behaviours.
In our deliveries, we directly target the people who ultimately
make the choices that determine their health and safety, the shiftworkers
themselves.
Fire
Shifting to Wellness measures its impact by measuring if the program
leads to employees making positive lifestyle changes. As research
demonstrates these positive changes lead to savings for organizations.
Bullseye!
The results are in! Implementing the
Shifting to Wellness leads to employees making positive lifestyle
changes.
In 2001, in partnership with Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), a survey
was administered to the Shifting to Wellness participants in Engineering
Services. 12.3% (325 of the 2642) of the employees participated
in this survey. The questions were targeted around whether employees
made more positive lifestyle choices as a result of participating
in the Shifting to Wellness Program. The findings of the CPR survey
demonstrate that participants of the Shifting to Wellness program
are making positive lifestyle changes as a result of participating
in the program. The following are some of the findings:
77.8% of respondents made at least one positive
lifestyle change since they participated in the Shifting to Wellness
sessions.
69.1% of respondents reported making more than
three positive lifestyle changes.
The most frequent changes were:
Improvement in eating habits 38%
Increase physical activity 35%
Better stress management 33.5%
Improvement in sleep routines/sleep patterns 33%
Our business plan involves developing a universal program audit
tool that will allow organizations to directly measure the impacts
of the Shifting to Wellness Program including the impact that the
positive lifestyle changes have on their bottom lines. |
